The sea, once it casts its spell, holds one in the net of wonder forever. ~Jacques Cousteau
Debra has an innate sense of color, rhythm, balance and harmony which are all reflected in her art. Her love of the sea, and the natural world's vivid colors and powerful motions, inspire many of her pieces. Debra loves to experiment with new techniques, mediums and color combinations to push past what has been done before to achieve a fresh, powerful and energetic force in her art.
Many artists' work have made an impact with Debra over the years, but there are a few that really resonate with her for their use of color, texture and movement. She is awed by the works of Vincent Van Gogh, Paul Kandinsky, Gerhard Richter and Brien Rutenberg.
Until recently, in addition to being an artist, Debra maintained an active interior design practice. Her design education and experience married the principles and creativity of design into her artwork. Many of her pieces are conceptualized with the intent of being placed in interior spaces.
Debra was born and raised in Southern California, close to the ocean, where she first fell in love with water, color and texture. She attended the University of California at Santa Barbara, obtaining degrees in Business Economics and Psychology. Debra also has her Master's Degree in Business Administration. After 16 years of working in Northern California's high-tech industry, she continued her education and obtained an Associate of Science Degree in Interior Design. Her design business began in 2004 and she has been painting abstract art for the last several years.
